Plans to redevelop the vacant BHS shop on Drovers Way have been given the thumbs up by local businesses.
The plans, which were made public in March, show developers Reef Estates wanted to demolish the existing building and construct a 130 room hotel with room for shops and eateries on the ground floor.
This week civic and business groups, as well as local pub landlords, have joined up to give the proposals their backing.
St Albans Business Improvement District (BID) manager Helen Burridge, said: “St Albans BID has been anecdotally informed that St Albans hotels regularly turn away business at peak times in the summer months and at weekends throughout the year with a subsequent economic loss. An additional 130 beds will provide much needed additional city centre rooms which will enable the visitor economy to focus on overnight stays.
“Given the number of BHS buildings currently standing empty and unwanted across the country, the advocacy for and investment in St Albans’ future economic growth is most welcome.”
