St Albans Museum + Gallery is asking locals to get involved in a new exhibition launching in 2024 to celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture.
Becoming Us: African Caribbean St Albans is a landmark exhibition run by Active Lifestyles, a local support group. It will aim to capture stories from the African Caribbean community in St Albans and the wider district through items and oral histories.
The first workshop, which was hailed as a major success, was held at Townsend Lawn Tennis Club in November. Volunteers and organisers came together to hear personal stories from local families.
Catherine Newley, audience development manager at St Albans Museums, said: “Partnering with local community groups allows us to delve into the rich, multicultural fabric of St Albans society.
“Many of the incredible stories of endeavour, embracing new ways of life and overcoming adversity may be lost without these projects, and we’re delighted to be able to capture and share such wonderful histories with the people of St Albans.”
Three further workshops will be held on January 26, February 23 and March 15 at Active Lifestyles venue, Townsend Lawn Tennis Club, and St Albans Museum + Gallery. Contact Active Lifestyles on 07572 040006 if you would like to get involved.
