BEATLES BAG: Amersham repair café works on briefcase with connection to famous band

Sustainable Amersham’s Repair Café helped to save another haul of beloved belongings from landfill on Saturday, November 4, including one particularly intriguing vintage briefcase.

The leather Victor briefcase was brought by an anonymous Amersham resident from a shop in Burlington Arcade during the 1960s. The resident, who worked with The Beatles, bought the briefcase to “look posh” in front of John, Paul, George and Ringo. According to said resident, she regularly used the briefcase to carry musical manuscripts.

Were there priceless manuscripts touched by arguably the greatest songwriters of all time still inside? Our anonymous resident thought not. But she had brought the briefcase along to the Amersham Repair Café on a whim in the hope of being able to put it to use again.

The briefcase was passed over to top volunteer repairer, Judi, who took a pair of paper clips to the jammed lock. After some prising, the briefcase burst open, revealing a stunning raspberry water silk lining in near-pristine condition.

This month, at least 26 items were given a new lease of life, including a wooden-stemmed floor lamp and a beloved electric toy.

The next Amersham Repair Café will take place at St Michael’s Church on Sycamore Road, between 10am and 1pm on January 6. Volunteers offer their woodwork, gluing and electrical skills, alongside tool-sharpening and sewing. All are welcome to enjoy a complimentary cuppa and slice of cake whilst giving their beloved belongings a second life.
