‘BASIC RIGHT’: Watford resident criticises GP for not purchasing vital medical supplies

Published on: 11th November 2022   |   By: Christina Pantelly   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Watford resident feels as if he has been stripped of his “basic human rights” after his GP surgery allegedly refused to purchase his medical supplies.

The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, has problems with his kidneys and regularly undergoes dialysis. His cannula, a tube which was fitted to his chest to allow access for the dialysis machine, cannot get wet. When showering, he must therefore use a non-reusable medical cover.

The resident says The Elms Surgery in Watford will not purchase the covers, forcing him to purchase them for £10 each.

The resident’s wife said: “It’s so unfair; it’s a human right to be able to have a shower when we want to.”

A spokesperson for The Elms Surgery said: “Our practice has provided the patient with all medicines and related medical care over several years.

“However, some items for his personal hygiene are not allowed by the local health authority/Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation Team, Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The patient has been informed of the CCG’s decision many times.”
