The Heather Club, a charity assisting those living with memory loss and dementia, won the Community Grant Volunteering Award recently.
Based at Carey Baptist Church, Marlowes, the Heather Club day-care centre has been serving the community for more than 40 years. During the COVID-19 lockdowns the Club was forced to shut it doors, but it never stopped providing support for its members.
A unique outreach programme called “Hemel Club at Home” was designed to allow staff and volunteers to continue to interact with their members. The Club invested in and delivered senior targeted tablets called “GrandPads”. Easy to use, with large buttons and a simple interface, the GrandPads allowed members and carers to connect through some of the darkest times for some of our community’s most vulnerable people.
One carer commented; “…the programme at the Heather Club reassures me that my Dad is in good hands and that I’m making a positive choice for him. Seeing him socialise is heart warming, and after a day at The Heather Club he is brighter for days afterwards.”
