ART-ILY AMAZING: St Albans artist exhibits paintings inspired by favourite home spots

Local artist Donna Borg has been celebrating her favourite parts of St Albans, in a new project that has seen her work showcased at The Abbey Theatre in September.

Donna told St Albans News: “I have always been interested in the arts, since a child. I love the theatre and the performing arts, and that definitely influences my work. I love feeling and character.”

Donna moved to the UK from Malta 8 years ago, where she decided to pursue her career as an actor which meant her painting took a step back.

This was until she took on the role of artist Olga Daniloff in a theatre production of Ladies in Lavender, where she had to paint on stage. Suddenly, her passion for painting was reignited.

Now, she spends her days on the streets of St Albans painting her favourite spots. This style of painting is called plein-air, which Donna says allows her to immerse herself in the area she is painting.

Donna said: “I paint outside because it’s beautiful to be outside and immerse yourself. The camera can never reproduce what you’re looking at but also there are so many beautiful landscapes you can explore by being outside.

“I go for walks and always notice something different each time, and it helps me learn a lot about the community and the people. I end up getting stopped and talking to lots of people who tell me about their memories of St Albans, I have very interesting chats!”

Her paintings have been exhibited at The Abbey Theatre, where many visitors have come to enjoy her work, including the Mayor of St Albans.
