ART ATTACK: Councillor protests against demolition of historic Abbots Langley building

Published on: 6th February 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A local district and parish councillor has organised a number of protests against plans to demolish the last Art and Crafts-style home in Abbots Langley.

Councillor Elinor Gazzard (pictured centre) has staged protests outside the house at 78 Gallows Hill Lane after plans were revealed to demolish the building to make way for the construction of four two-storey semi-detached dwellings.

According to cllr Gazzard, the house was built in 1921 and is a local heritage asset. It was built by John Inett Ward, who cllr Gazzard said was “very important in the village”, for his daughter, wood sculptor Nellie Faulconer.

The house was constructed quite late for its style, according to cllr Gazzard.

She told ABBOTSnews: “It’s very important to me. I commented on the last planning application I was aware of in 2023. Since then, I’ve become a parish and district councillor.

“When I first saw it, I knew we had to make a stand. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

The planning application was received on Monday, November 25, and has received 16 objections and one comment of support.

One objection reads: “78 Gallows Hill Lane is designated a Local Heritage Asset for a reason. Real experts made the decision to attach ‘significant architectural interest’ to this unique building.

“Please, I beg you to save this last Arts and Crafts building in the area. Wonderfully restored, it will be a huge asset for the next 100 years!”

Speaking about the response she has had when organising protests against the plan, cllr Gazzard said: “It’s been really good. Three times I’ve been there, and a number of people have gone. People are keen to stop it happening.”

SLG Designs Limited, who applied for the plan, and the plan’s agent, TAS Architects, have been contacted for comment.
