The RSPCA is appealing for information after a young cat was found in a zipped up freezer bag dumped on the street.
The seven-month-old black and white cat, named Spencer by RSPCA staff, was discovered in a Marks & Spencer freezer bag which had been zipped up and dumped outside a house in Park Avenue, Potters Bar on Thursday. (February 8)
The member of the public who discovered poor Spencer contacted the RSPCA and Animal Collection Officer (ACO) Kate Wright collected the confused male cat.
She said: “The kind member of the public who called us had come home from work late that night at about 11.30pm and spotted the freezer bag. The juvenile cat is not neutered and had no microchip. He is a very friendly boy and certainly didn’t deserve to be thrown away in a carrier bag!
“There is never an excuse to abandon any animal in this way and poor Spencer would have been very confused, frightened and very cold. It is not known how long he had been there but he was very hungry when he was taken in.
“There was no CCTV in the area so we are appealing for anyone who may have seen someone with a large M&S freezer bag, or spotted anything unusual in Park Avenue before about 11.30pm on Thursday, February 8, to contact the inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and reference ACO Wright.”
In 2016 there were more than 22,000 incidents of cats being abandoned reported to the RSPCA national cruelty line.
Spencer is now being looked after by staff at RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre in Hertfordshire and will soon be looking to find his forever home.
