APARTMENTS APPROVED: Green light given for new flats on former Kings Langley college campus

A plan for 65 new one and two-bedroom apartments on the site of a former West Herts College building have been approved on appeal.

Located just off Home Park Mill Link Road, the new one-acre residential community, tentatively called ‘Millworks’ will be constructed by developers Bellway North London after the scheme was approved on February 28. Three Rivers District Council had already previous granted outline permission for the plans.

The site is expected to launch early next year, with a goal for residents moving in by the end of 2023.

Ali Maruf, Managing Director of Bellway North London, said: “This approval gives us the green light to forge ahead with our plans and means we can deliver on our promise to Kings Langley to provide much-needed new homes in the village.

“Our first job will be to undertake a six-month demolition programme to remove the former buildings of the college, which has moved to a new state-of-the-art campus four miles away in Hemel Hempstead.

“Once the demolition process has been completed, we can start on the groundworks which will see us repurpose this redundant college campus and convert it into an exciting new community.

“We are well aware of the history of the site as a papermill and the legacy of milling in the local area, which is mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book in 1086.

“The Millworks name is a tribute to this heritage and to the college which previously occupied the site and specialised in engineering and building services.”

This is not the first collaboration between West Herts College and Bellway, as the developer is building new homes at The Foundry, on the former Dacorum campus in Hemel Hempstead, which forms the first part of the college’s relocation and transformation scheme.

Ali said: “We anticipate that Millworks is going to be a much sought-after collection of apartments housed in a modern five-storey building which takes inspiration from the site’s history. All the apartments will benefit from allocated parking in a gated car park within the development and each will have their own private balcony or terrace.

“This is also a highly convenient and commutable location for new housing, just a short walk from Kings Langley railway station, with trains into London Euston in about half an hour.”
