The RSPCA has launched its annual adoption campaign, encouraging people in Northwood, Ruislip, Stanmore, Pinner and elsewhere to give a rescued animal a new home, as figures show animal abandonment is rising while rehoming is decreasing.
In the Greater London area, there were 3,011 abandoned animals reported to the RSPCA in 2021. This currently places the region as the county with the highest number of abandoned animals.
The number of animals being dumped is also on the rise nationally, with a 17 per cent increase from 2020 to 2021 and a 24 per cent increase in 2022.
Pet welfare expert Dr Samantha Gaines said: “Unfortunately, we believe we’re really starting to see the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis.”
She added: “We’re also beginning to see more animals coming into our care because their owners simply couldn’t afford to care for them anymore; or, in the most extreme cases, having been neglected or abandoned due to the rising cost of pet care.”
