A boxer from Watford is using his own mental health struggles to support others.
Corrie Mustafa has been sharing his boxing journey on his Instagram page. In May last year, he was thrilled to announce that he had won his first Ultra White Collar Boxing event by knockdown.
Now, the boxer is facing a new project: a fight to raise money for mental health charity Mind, which will take place at Watford Leisure Centre Woodside on Saturday, April 26.
Corrie explained that living with Asperger’s syndrome, ADHD and motor tics often left him feeling “isolated”, and that boxing became his “outlet”.
Speaking to Watford News, Corrie said: “My mission is to become a mental health advocate in combat sports and open my own gym for disadvantaged people.
“Life is isolating for everyone, but particularly for men who don’t talk about their mental health. This journey is personal to me.”
When asked about how he felt preparing for the fight, he said: “I’m really excited! My last fight felt so surreal. I had tunnel vision the second I walked in, and when the lights came up, it was an amazing feeling! But I’m more focused this time around.”
