On Christmas Day 2013, Chalfont St Peter resident Paul’s wife, a carer, went to her care home to offer help and support to residents and staff.
During her shift, she began to feel unwell, prompting the manager to call Paul to pick her up and take her home.
When Paul arrived at the care home, he found his wife sitting in the manager’s office with her head down. As she looked up at him, she suddenly collapsed.
Her heart had stopped, but thanks to the quick actions of staff and paramedics, her pulse was restored.
She was transferred to Harefield Hospital, where she underwent treatment in the catheter lab before being placed in an induced coma for seven days. After regaining consciousness, she continued her recovery in the hospital ward.
Now, years later, Paul is taking on a virtual fitness challenge to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.
Speaking to Chalfonts News, Paul said: “I am doing this virtual challenge to raise money for this amazing charity. I will be virtually walking/running Route 66, from E. Adams Street in Chicago to Santa Monica Pier in California a total distance of 2,278 miles.”
