AMAZING ANDREA: Bushey nurse who revamped hospital discharge nominated for top award

Published on: 12th July 2022   |   By: Christina Pantelly   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Bushey nurse who assisted in turn around the frailty unit at Watford General Hospital has been nominated for a top UK award.

Andrea Hone from the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was chosen as a finalist for the RCN Nursing Awards 2022’s Commitment to Carers category from among hundreds of applicants.

When the National Inpatient Survey revealed that Andrea’s trust had received below-average marks for taking patients’ home circumstances and incorporating patients in discharge choices, she responded fast.

She began the Connecting with Carers Discharge Project to assess the needs of caregivers of patients in the frailty unit at Watford General Hospital, working with the trust’s integrated discharge team and Hertfordshire County Council.

Andrea said: “The project has given the trust an opportunity to expand the team with a carer coordinator who will solely work to support carers and develop the service.

“I was honoured to be shortlisted for this award and it is definitely one of the highlights of my career. It makes me feel so proud to be able to showcase the project further.

“It is so nice to be recognised for the work that I have done to support carers and gives me even more motivation to improve and develop this service.”
