The MP for Watford has criticised a Liberal Democrat campaign leaflet as a “tissue of lies”.
Matt Turmaine MP lambasted the leaflet, which was distributed ahead of a by-election in Watford Borough Council’s Tudor Ward in December and promoted Liberal Democrat candidate Callum Robertson.
The leaflet states “the Conservatives can’t win here” alongside a chart claiming that Labour and the Liberal Democrats won most of the votes in Watford in the 2024 general election.
However, the Liberal Democrats actually came third behind Labour and the Conservatives.
In response to this, Mr Turmaine MP said: “The Liberal Democrats always pretend and try and hoodwink people into believing they can win Watford at a general election, but can’t and in reality, never do.”
The MP also criticised the leaflet for claiming Labour had promised to build a new hospital within a year of taking office.
He added: “We said no such thing. Nobody could as it would have been impossible. They’ve simply made that up. Everyone knows hospitals don’t spring up just like that.”
In response, Lib Dem Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “The patients and staff at Watford General have waited far too long for the hospital to be rebuilt.
“Before the general election, a number of Labour politicians said they would rebuild the hospital. After the election, they said this wouldn’t start until 2032 at the earliest. This is simply unacceptable.”
