Proposals to tighten the law around crossbow sales have been put forward by the government following serious incidents, including the Bushey triple murder in July 2024.
On July 9, 2024, Bushey residents Carol, Hannah, and Louise Hunt were found fatally injured from stab wounds and crossbow shots.
In a memorandum published on Thursday, April 24, amendments were tabled for Commons Committee stage and suggest a two-stage age verification procedure should be involved during sales and delivery of crossbows to under 18s.
Home office minister Dame Diana Johnson told the House of Commons: “We are very aware of concerns about the use of crossbows in violent attacks.
“As part of our wider work to get dangerous and lethal weapons off Britain’s streets, we will shortly be publishing our response to that consultation setting out how we plan to go further to limit the availability and accessibility of crossbows in this country.”
It also sets out plans to create further offences for those who fail to comply with requirements.
Following this, on Saturday, April 26, two women were victims of a crossbow attack in Leeds.
