A veteran’s group in Abbots Langley received a minibus as a generous donation from a school in Hertfordshire.
Veterans Support Group Abbots Langley (VSGAL) were donated the 17 seater bus from St Edmunds College in Ware on Monday, May 13 at the Abbots Langley & District Men’s club where veterans attended a ceremony where the bus was handed over to the group.
The minibus will allow the strong group of army vets from Abbots Langley and the surrounding area to travel the country, meeting different support groups. £1,000 was also donated to help with running costs.
Founder of VSGAL, Liz Burns, said: “We received an unexpected donation from St Georges Charity for £1,000. This has been put aside to enable us to operate and we were donated a 17 seater minibus from St Edmunds College, Ware, to enable us to go on outings and this will also enable other community groups to hire from us.
“This generosity was very unexpected and is greatly appreciated as it will enable us to visit other veteran support groups and to others setting up.”
Liz set up the group in April 2018 after herself and six other veterans visited a support group in Heyford and Bicester.
She added: “We brought back this idea to share with some veterans living locally as I had felt that this group was needed here in Abbots Langley. We needed to find somewhere to meet regularly and as we were starting with no funds at all I approached the president of the men’s club. They agreed to allow us to meet every Monday from 12 till 4pm free of charge. This was and is a wonderful help to us.”
On the first Monday of the month, advisors from Veterans UK, SSAFA, Band of Brothers, Veterans Hearing, Stoll, Herts Helpline and Watford Borough Armed Forces Champion to enable all veterans to receive the support the need.
