Abbots school goes extra mile to help students

Published on: 20th October 2017   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

Parmiter’s School has been recognised as going the extra mile to help disadvantaged students. The school was given an award for the work it has done to boost the achievements of pupils from less privileged backgrounds. The £5,000 reward was given to Parmiter’s as it had put the Pupil Premium to effective use. The Pupil Premium was a key Liberal Democrat demand now delivered in Government, and is £2.5bn of extra money that is targeted towards helping disadvantaged students in school.

Parmiter’s is now able to apply for a prize of up to £250,000 – the winner of which will be announced by Nick Clegg in March. Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: “It is great to see that Parmiter’s has been putting the Pupil Premium to good use, and I am proud to see that this has been recognised by the government. “Anyone who knows me knows I am passionate about education. When I was a teacher I specialised in teaching children with special educational needs because I believe that everyone should have a chance for a good education that will set them up for life. Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Tim Clement-Jones said: “Pupil premium is a wonderful innovation because it means that schools get extra money to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and schools don’t have to divert resources from general funds so everyone benefits. “It is now clear the pupil premium is making a real difference in Watford.” Headmaster Nick Daymond said: “In the letter we received from David Laws MP, the reason we were selected is that we are ‘one of the highest achieving schools in the country in terms of the attainment and value-added progress of your disadvantaged pupils since 2011.’ “We are delighted to receive the award which is a tribute to the hard work of staff, students, parents and governors.”
