A father from Abbots Langley will take on the London Marathon next month to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.
Joel Lagnado, 42, is no stranger to such challenges, having previously run marathons to raise funds for causes such as disability charity Sense, the British Heart Foundation, and the neonatal unit at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital.
Joel will run his 10th and final marathon in London on Sunday, April 27, to raise vital funds for Children with Cancer UK.
Explaining his reasons for taking on yet another marathon, Joel said: “Firstly, we all know someone who has had cancer. It’s a horrible disease. But for kids to have to suffer? I simply cannot get my head around this. I am a father of two young daughters who live a normal, healthy life. I struggle to comprehend the suffering that children with cancers and their families go through on a daily basis.
“I have the ability to run, which is a blessing. That allows me to raise money for amazing charities and causes.”
Joel also wants to prove that age is no barrier to achieving your dreams.
He said: “I have run faster in the past 12 months than I did when I began my running journey in 2013. I’d also like to inspire my daughters that they can achieve their dreams and goals through hard work.”
With the right training, nutrition and mindset, Joel is hoping that his 10th and final marathon will be the one he finally completes in under four hours.
He added: “I have a lifelong goal of running a marathon in under four hours, which I haven’t quite made yet, so I can’t stop until I do!
“I gave myself nine months to train for London. I am healthier and fitter than I have ever been. But also, I am training my mind. This is the big difference. I work in community mental health and also have my own mental health coaching business. So I have been working on developing my own mental strength throughout my training.”
