Music is known as the soundtrack to life, which is something that has been captured in a new documentary created by a Bushey school.

The Purcell School, which is the UK’s oldest specialist music school, has announced the release of Purcell – A 60 Year Celebration, which showcases two musical projects developed by the school’s Composition Department.

The projects, SCRAWL and simultaneoUS, “demonstrate the school’s commitment to fostering artistic collaboration, innovation and inclusivity among young composers”.

SCRAWL is a 10-minute composition described as “musical graffiti”. It was written by head of composition Alison Cox in collaboration with 60 alumni composers, and was performed by the 60-strong 2023 Symphony Orchestra to mark the school’s anniversary.

simulataneoUS was composed by BBC Young Composer winner and alumna Maddy Chassar-Hesketh. Built on musical fragments by 100 schoolchildren, as well as professional and student composers, the project weaves together diverse creative voices.

Reflecting on the documentary, former Master of the King’s Music Dame Judith Weir praised the documentary’s ability to capture the essence of the projects.

She said: “The Purcell School documentary was beautifully directed and filmed. simultaneoUS ingeniously unifies the snippets of material in a smooth, consistent style and voice. Whereas SCRAWL celebrates the difference between all 60 segments. I was just amazed by SCRAWL.”
