After losing her job amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Isobel Perl decided it was time to take the leap and follow her dream of pursuing a career in skincare and makeup.
Isobel set up her own business PERLcosmetics over lockdown after she was given her notice from her previous job in April.
The business which sells clay-based face masks launched in July and is run by Isobel herself from her home in Watford.
Isobel said that although it was daunting losing her job during a global pandemic, it motivated her to set up her own business.
She said: “Obviously losing my job was difficult because it was my support blanket, but it wasn’t my dream job.
“I have always been a massive lover of skin care and make up so when I lost the job, I thought maybe this is my opportunity.”
Isobel decided to focus on clay-based face mask after noticing there was a gap in the market in the UK.
She said: “I remember reading an article about how popular clay-based masks were in Australia but realised there wasn’t one company in the UK that was known for that.”
After a busy launch, Isobel sold out of her first batch of masks in four weeks but is now looking for ways to keep business up.
She said: “I’m really hoping that Christmas will pick things up again. I am thinking about buying Christmas cards from local designers and gift-wrapping products so it will make a nice Christmas present.
“I don’t want to give up, I’m so passionate about what I’m doing, and it’s been giving me so much enjoyment and has kept me so busy of lockdown.”
Isobel also mentioned that the support she has received from other local business has been incredible and it is nice to have a community where everyone can help each other.
