Northwood & Ruislip United Synagogue (NRUS) recently hosted an event on combating antisemitism in sport.
In May, the synagogue convened a panel of sports figures, community leaders, and advocates to discuss practical ways to combat antisemitism within the world of sport.
Attendees included David Bernstein CBE, former chairman of the Football Association and Manchester City, and Claudia Mendoza, the CEO of the Jewish Leadership Council.
Alan Moss, chairman of NRUS, said: “What a wonderfully successful event fully supported by our community and others. The panel members were most impressive, and they covered a wide range of topics in this area, provoking a strong and lively audience participation and response.”
The panel heard from former footballer Joe Jacobson as he highlighted his experiences with ignorance and stereotyping in the sport. He called for the urgent need for better education at youth level.
Jonathan Metliss, chairman of the panel, said: “A thoroughly enjoyable and successful event, so well supported by the Northwood community. It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to be involved and to have the opportunity to discuss such important and relevant issues.”
The evening also spotlighted Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Israel, with 50 per cent of proceeds from the event donated to support its ongoing humanitarian work.
On the day, Mr Bernstein remarked: “Despite challenges in wider society, football at the top level has made progress. But that doesn’t mean we can be complacent. We must be vigilant and proactive, especially during times of tension.”
