A community event has raised over £2,700 to support the development of a new library at Laurance Haines School in Watford.

Held on Portugal Day – Tuesday, June 10 – the event brought together students, staff and members of the local Portuguese community for a day filled with music, dance and traditional food.

The raffle and variety of food stalls were a huge success, raising over £2,700 to support plans for the school’s new library. Raffle prizes include food and drink thanks to generous donations from local Portuguese businesses.

Headteacher Jo Ball said: “We are lucky to have such a diverse school community. This was such a wonderful event which brought together our whole school community. It was fantastic to see the pride on the children’s faces when they sang the Portuguese national anthem.”

The celebration was attended by Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor, representatives from the Watford Portuguese Association, and an elected representative for Portuguese communities in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Mayor Taylor said: “I had a great time attending the Portugal Day celebrations at Laurance Haines School. It was wonderful to see Watford’s Portuguese community proudly celebrating their culture, food, and traditions with the local community.”
