WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: Members in Shenley continue to make change 105 years later

Published on: 29th January 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

Members of Shenley’s Women’s Institute (WI) are proud to still meet in the same village hall, on the same day of each month, as members of the first-ever meeting did back in February 1919.

Shenley WI meets on the first Thursday of the month at Shenley Village Hall, with an additional social at the Methodist Church Hall at 1.45pm on the second Thursday of the month.

Anna Churnin, president of the Shenley WI, explains: “The WI vision is to create a world where women come together to learn, share skills, and work to become active citizens, influencing change to improve lives in their local, national, and global communities.

“This vision has spanned and influenced our meetings over the last 105 years and is as relevant today as it was then.”

According to Anna, members of the WI learn as much from each other as they do from regular guest speakers. Last May, for instance, WI member Hayley offered an entertaining presentation about her long-term passion for netball.
