WILD WARNINGS: RSPCA issues caution after fox found tangled in Northwood football net

Published on: 9th September 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

The RSPCA has issued a plea asking people to put away football nets when not in use after a fox was found tangled up in Northwood.

Charity inspector Francesca Tanbini recently came across the stricken animal, which had become caught in football netting at Hillside Junior School. Luckily, she was able to free the fox.

She said: “Sadly, this is all too common. This fox had a lucky escape and, when I released him, he ran off, unharmed.

“It’s a perfect example of what can happen when netting is left out, especially at empty schools during the summer holidays.

“This is such a stressful situation for an animal, particularly a wild animal, to find themselves in and one which could be easily avoided. This was a quick rescue, but sadly some animals can suffer for days before anyone notices they’re stuck.

“We would urge those using netting for sports to remove and store all nets after their game and put any discarded or old netting safely in a bin. Any garden netting, such as pond netting, should be replaced with solid metal mesh.”

Hillside Junior School has been contacted for comment.
