Several incredible community projects have been rolled out nationwide, including one in Hemel, thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF).
A report published last month revealed the results of the NLHF’s £5million Nextdoor Nature programme, which has enabled Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (HMWT) to work more closely with local communities over the last two years.
This has included HMWT appointing two Wilder Communities Officers, one in Watford and one in Dacorum.
As part of the programme, residents and local volunteers created a plan to improve an outdoor space for the benefit of local wildlife at the Cardo-maintained social housing site, Evelyn Sharp House in Hemel Hempstead. Around 20 people came together to create a bug hotel, paint planters, and plant 60 tree saplings, 1,000 crocus bulbs, and wildflower seeds.
Lea Ellis, engagement manager at HMWT, said: “It was essential that we asked local people what they would like to see happen so that they had the personal motivation to see their aspirations through and continue them beyond the programme’s reach.”
