An aspiring filmmaker is appealing for the community’s help for a new project exploring the significance of the Follett Drive bike.
The bike, which has been chained to the road sign in Abbots Langley for a number of years, is often decorated for various occasions including Christmas and Halloween.
Reece Berry, 23, has set his sights on the bike for his first solo project.
Reece told ABBOTSnews: “My grandparents introduced me to video editing and since then I’ve been learning how to make my own films. I’ve recently finished my degree in film production – my graduate film has gone on to get screened at many film festivals across the country. I’m interested in telling local stories and want to share them with the wider community.
“My dream is to make documentaries that tell the stories of inspiring people and showcase the best of what people are capable of.
“My initial inspiration for the idea was to use the idea of community around the bike; it’s a road I pass on a daily basis and I always wonder why it gets decorated for special occasions and who is responsible.”
Indeed, on Friday, March 21, locals were pleasantly surprised to see the famous Follett Drive bike decorated in honour of Red Nose Day, a fundraising event organised by Comic Relief. It featured a mannequin bearing a Red Nose Day t-shirt, wig and, of course, a red nose!
However, Reece hopes the bike will only be a small part of the documentary. The bulk of it will explore the stories of people living on the road and the community within Follett Drive.
Reece lived and attended school in Abbots Langley for 21 years, but the drive has remained a mystery to him. This curiosity compelled him to create the documentary, as an outsider looking in.
He added: “There are so many interesting people out there with stories that need a light shining on them. If anyone wants to contribute and believes they have a great life story worth sharing, then that’s the whole reason I want to make films!”
