A Croxley café released a tongue-in-cheek statement for April Fool’s Day, highlighting the issues faced by many local businesses.
On Tuesday, April 1, The Kitchen Croxley posted a statement on social media in response to the Budget and Spring Statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.
They highlighted a range of changes being implemented in the business, including “laying off 99 per cent of our team”.
The statement continues: “We are sad but in their place we will have a touch screen ordering system, with your orders being fulfilled by a new generation of AI robots – cloned from our fantastic team. (Please be aware we have alerted everyone to this and their DNA will be obtained painlessly – for example by asking them to bring in a toothbrush.)”
The joke ended with a serious message, however, with the statement concluding: “We would like to thank our customers for their support… Sadly this and the previous government have not offered the same support to small businesses. Their short-sighted approach to the challenges faced by small businesses and in particular those in retail and hospitality is disappointing.”
On Sunday, April 20, The Kitchen Croxley posted on social media site X: “I posted this Spring Statement on April 1. Of course the solutions are a joke but the issues are all real… The government needs to understand micro businesses are a valuable asset to communities… But they are not sustainable with current overheads.”
Owner of The Kitchen Linda Anderson previously criticised the government’s rise in National Insurance contributions and the reduction in Business Rates relief.
She even appeared on Politics Live on BBC Two last summer to speak about the problems facing small businesses.
