A member of the Watford Chess Juniors held his own against international masters and experts in a chess competition last month.
On Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6, six Watford juniors took part in the St Albans Chess Congress.
The star performance came from London under-12 champion Advait Keerthi Kumar. He played in the ‘open to all’ section which included two international masters and a host of other experts.
Advait had won six of his seven games to take the London title in December, and he continued this good run with three wins and one draw from his five games at St Albans. He finished joint fourth in a field of 31 players.
Other juniors in the group also performed well. Watford junior coach Roger Lancaster singled out 10-year-old Gautam Sriram, who achieved a 50 per cent score in the ‘challengers’ section, and 13-year-old Leandro Kunz who – playing in the ‘minor’ section in his first-ever tournament – matched Advait’s score of 3.5 points to finish joint seventh in a field of 73.
