In anticipation of Three Rivers District Council (TRDC)’s first review of their Climate Emergency and Sustainability Action Plan, a Croxley councillor has said the emergency’s effects can already be felt on the village.
Councillor Chris Mitchell of the Green Party has urged the council’s sustainability team to take on board the effect of some of the unusual weather incidents that have happened as of late in Croxley, including heavy storms, record summer temperatures and an unusually warm autumn.
He says: “Over the past 2-3 years, flooding has become a perennial problem in Three Rivers following increasingly severe storms.
“The risk of fire from extremely high temperatures in the summer has also risen substantially, and unusually warm autumns are starting to lead to disease in plants and trees, which are struggling to complete their traditional growth cycles.
“It’s an issue people should be made aware of so I’m throwing myself into backing the review to help identify the best ways to protect us all. It’s essential we focus on how to adapt our environment and build resilience to change.”
TRDC have already enacted several initiatives this year designed to help the local environment, including a leaflet guide to greening your home and a greener living newsletter.
TRDC have also been contacted for comment.
