Watford skipper Troy Deeney admits playing at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup gave the Watford squad a taste of “what it could be like every week” and has urged his team-mates to use that motivation over the remainder of the campaign.
Premier League leaders Chelsea eventually triumphed 3-0 in west London, but they were made to work for the Third Round victory as the Hornets held strong for nearly an hour. Jose Mourinho made two changes at the interval to freshen up his home side as the Hornets matched the Blues. Deeney said: “Up until the first goal, we very much held our own. “We’ll take the positives from that performance – the three quick goals killed us. The first goal shows the difference in quality, I think.” The striker was referring to sub Willian’s well executed strike which gave Jonathan Bond no chance in the Watford goal. “We held our own, we did well in the first half and we had a few opportunities where we could have nicked one and made it interesting,” the former Walsall man added. Deeney then spoke from the heart about what he expects from the Hornets’ squad between now and May. “It doesn’t mean anything unless we have the same level of commitment against Huddersfield, Charlton and Blackpool,” he stated firmly. “This gives people a taste of what it could be like every week, playing at United, Liverpool and the like. “If we want to do that we have to graft through the next four months of the Championship. It gives me more inspiration to try harder.”
