Watford coach taking it one game at a time

Watford head coach Slavisa Jokanovic was understandably delighted with his side’s 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic but added that he and his players must think ahead and not back. A brace from skipper Troy Deeney was good enough to take the points back to Hertfordshire and send the Hornets to the top of the table. Jokanovic explained that he wants all his players to feel involved, despite not selecting some of them for matches. He said: “There were 23 players here with us for this match – I want them all to feel that they are part of this, even if I cannot select them all.” Jokanovic added: “This was a very big three points. It was a difficult pitch. The team showed character and desire. They definitely played well enough to get the three points.” Of that there was little doubt. A very even – and largely uneventful – first half won’t live long in the memory of either sets of fans on a chilly Tuesday night in Lancashire. But with Jokanovic replacing Marco Motta with Fernando Forestieri at half-time, in one fell swoop he set the tone for a front-foot second-half display from the Golden Boys. “Perhaps we started the first half with many respects for our opponent? But it is certain we tried to push to win the game after the break. “A clean sheet is big news for this team and it shows good things not just about the defenders but about the way every player in the team is helping to defend. “In football, you can’t guarantee anything but I think we are almost certain to score during 90 minutes so the more clean sheets, the more chances to win,” he added. “But only Ipswich is important right now. It is no longer October or November now; there is no chance to fix mistakes so this is why we must be focused and concentrate on what is in front of us. “I repeat: football has no memory. We have eight games, and the only game that matters now is Ipswich at our home on Saturday.”
