Star midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure came to Watford’s rescue this afternoon with a late header to hand the Hornets a share of the spoils against Newcastle.
With key men Troy Deeney and Doucoure starting the game on the bench, Watford looked a shadow of the team who pushed Chelsea all the way just three days ago.
Hornets boss Javi Gracia will be disappointed with the below par performance as his men lacked fluency. After Gerard Deulofeu missed a good early chance, it was the visitors who went in front when Solomon Rondon headed home a Christian Atsu cross.
Newcastle grew in confidence and could have doubled their lead when Rondon headed home a cross by Ayoze Perez but he was ruled offside.
After Newcastle started the second period in confident fashion, Gracia replaced Will Hughes and Domingos Quina with Deeney and Doucoure. It was the latter who spared Watford’s blushes.
