Parts of Kings Langley and Chipperfield have been badly affected by flooding this winter.
One area regularly affected by this issue is the Sunderlands Yard allotments, where five floods have been recorded by operators Kings Langley Parish Council (KLPC).
A meeting was recently held between KLPC, allotment holders and Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) to discuss possible solutions.
HCC’s bridges team found that detritus from the canal has been blocking the free flow of water through the culvert at Home Park Mill Link Road, causing flooding at the allotments.
Parish councillor Alan Johnson told KINGSnews: “HCC is going to check with their legal team to find out who owns the land either side of the tributary.
“Once that has been established, they will be asked to install a floating dam, meaning there will be nothing to cause blockages in the future.”
Another area regularly hit with flooding is Nunfield in Chipperfield.
Resident Lindsey Mills said: “People can’t cross the road as the pavement is underwater, parking is impossible unless you have wellies, and if you do park there your car gets covered in dirty water.”
A spokesperson for HCC said: “Our highways team will be visiting Nunfield to carry out a CCTV survey of the drains and pipes and clean them out as necessary. We will need to close the road to do this and we are currently looking for a suitable date.
“The flooding at Sunderlands Yard allotments is a complicated issue, but we believe that a debris boom where the channel running alongside the allotments meets the Grand Union Canal would make a difference and we are working with the Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency and landowner to get this installed. We are also working to find out who is responsible for the channel and weir upstream of the culvert at Home Park Mill Link Road.”
