As this wet and windy winter continues, local volunteers have been working together to help prevent flooding and drainage problems at Northwood Recreation Ground.
The Friends of Northwood Recreation Ground have been working tirelessly to clear the site and keep it useable throughout the season, with the most recent clean-up gathering taking place on Saturday, December 30.
The key work that they carried out involved removing obstructions from the ground’s central drainage ditch, which is now flowing with water once more, helping to keep the land from becoming too waterlogged.
The cleaning party also managed to unblock a large drain next to Northwood FC’s stadium, which has recently had waterlogging troubles of its own. The system was packed with sticks, leaves and debris, leaving the water with nowhere to go and causing the surrounding grassland to become swampy.
Ben Rawson-Jones, leader of the recent group clean-up and founder of the Friends, said: “Thanks so much to everyone who braved the conditions to help in yesterday’s ditch-centric working party in the park – a truly great effort from Dave, Fiona, Graham, John Inman and Sumeet.
“Fingers crossed things will improve from now on and the local community can enjoy park life much more. Thanks again to everyone who volunteered and here’s to more of the local community working together in 2024!”
