WATER WASTE: Croxley councillors tackle canal litter after residents raise concerns

Published on: 5th August 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Two Green Party district councillors have implored the Canal & River Trust (CRT) to do more to keep Croxley’s canalside free of litter.

Councillors Chris Mitchell and Narinder Sian say they have received a number of messages from residents saying that the amount of rubbish, particularly plastic litter, has increased since the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Since then, cllr Mitchell has been chasing the CRT, and recently held a meeting with them and Croxley Green Residents’ Association.

The pair also went down to the canals to see the problem for themselves, and found an incredible amount of litter.

However, they have stated that work by the CRT is now being carried out.

Cllr Mitchell said: “I thank CRT for now taking action. I hope that the area will be cleared up fully soon. There’s lot of wildlife along the canal, with birds nesting as well. Swans and cygnets are immersed in litter.”

Cllr Sian said: “Walking along the canal, I noticed there is quite a lot of litter, general rubbish and an increase in graffiti under the bridges.”

CRT has been contacted for comment.
