Urban Big Beach is next in the Big Events series

Watford Borough Council is just weeks away from launching a Big Beach in the town centre where people will be able to relax in 100 tonnes of real sand. The beach – measuring 20 metres long by 15 metres wide – will go next to the pond, so people can feel like they really are at the seaside. The castaway-themed beach will allow residents to get away from it all, and it’s totally free to use. Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “This beach is going to be great fun for everyone. Why go all the way to the seaside when we are going to bring the beach here? You can go to some brilliant shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs as well when you visit our beach in Watford. “Plus we’re going to have a whole range of free activities going on every day at the Big Beach – from a children’s pirate party to a 40-piece brass band. Everyone’s welcome to join in, and they’re for all ages. Plus there will be beach huts and beach food here.” The Big Beach will run from Saturday July 25 to Sunday August 2, staying open from 9am to 9pm every day. It is one of a series of major community experiences the council is staging as part of the Big Events series to celebrate its extensive refurbishment of The Parade. On the Big Beach’s launch day, there will be face-painting, magic and even some yoga. Plus Everyone Active will lead an exercise class at 12.30pm and 2.30pm to help people get fit for summer. The beach will be transformed into a pirates’ paradise on Sunday July 26 when Fizz Kids hold a Pirate Party. There will be a pirate fancy dress competition and a host of swashbuckling games, including the limbo and a pirate themed magic show at 2.30pm. Shiver me timbers! And these are only a few of the free activities on offer during the course of the week – for the full list, visit www.watfordbigevents.co.uk. The next Big Event is the Big Screen, where a mixture of hit films and classic cinema treats will be shown in The Parade by the pond for free. This will be happening from Thursday August 20 to Sunday August 23.
