UP IN SMOKE: Vapes seized as worries over legitimacy of Watford businesses continues

Hundreds of illegal vapes and e-cigarettes have been seized from Watford streets.

As previously reported, a recent investigation found that 65 per cent of Watford businesses that were inspected were found to have broken the terms of their license.

Officers from the Community Safety Unit teamed up with three police cadets to test several shops in the High Street on September 21.

Despite being under the age of 18, the three cadets were able to buy illicit vape products unchallenged in two premises, without being asked for ID.

As a result, police inspected the stock and seized a significant number of products that allegedly did not meet legal requirements.

Sergeant Karl Diggins, who organised the operation along with Senior Licensing Officer Jo Tomkins, said: “It is illegal to sell vape products to anyone under the age of 18, and the fact that our cadets were easily able to purchase them unchallenged is a real cause for concern. We’re committed to working in partnership with Trading Standards to ensure the premises in Watford adhere to the law.”

A Hertfordshire Trading Standards spokesperson said: “It’s important that we protect our residents, particularly children, from the risks posed by non-compliant vapes, as well as making sure that businesses that do follow the rules can’t be undercut by those that don’t.”
