UNSAFE ENVIRONMENT: Stanmore hospital leaves social media platform over ‘hate speech’

Published on: 24th September 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore has closed its X account after citing an increase in “hate speech” on the social media platform.

The hospital announced on Thursday, August 8, that its account would close the following day, 13 years since it was opened.

RNOH says X, which was called Twitter until July 2023, is “currently not a safe, healthy or inclusive environment to engage and interact with our communities”.

They also say it does not now reflect their values or that of the NHS.

In a statement, they explained: “Throughout the past 12 months or so, we have all witnessed an increased volume of hate speech and abusive commentary on X. This is alongside the sustained spread and promotion of misinformation about vaccinations as well as other important issues that require reasoned, fact-based discussion.

“We are proud of the diverse backgrounds of our RNOH team and the communities we care for. Their safety is a priority for RNOH and extends to online as well as physical spaces.”
