Northwood FC’s Under-18s have celebrated after a last minute goal from their keeper won the team the league title.
The team needed to win their final game of the season against Tring Athletic on Thursday, April 24, to win the U18 Allied Counties League title. Their opponents for the day would take the title if Northwood drew or lost.
In the final minute of the game, Northwood won a corner, as the score stood at 0-0. The dire nature of the moment saw the team’s keeper, Henry Ford, come up to the opposition’s penalty box to help.
The ball was fired into the box, flicked on at the front post, and smashed into the back of the net by none other than Ford himself, amazingly securing both the game and the title in a single flick of his boot!
Northwood & Ruislip News spoke to the team’s coach, Jamie Barry, about the moment.
He said: “My reaction was disbelief. I watched my coaching staff and run down the line and get involved with the chaos I stood there with my hands on my head.
“I want to say thank you. We have had great support at the U18s and saw more than 150 people at the final game. That is unheard of for an U18 league game like this. A massive thank you to the parents and supporters at a really special moment.”
Having won the league, the team now have the opportunity to win a champions cup, which features the winners of four other local leagues. Last year, the U18s won both the league and this cup, and Jamie is shooting for it again, hoping to achieve the ‘double double’.
