TV MAKEOVER: Charity shop in Watford transformed for upcoming BBC series

The New Hope shop on Queens Road in Watford briefly became the backdrop for a new BBC drama series last month.

Filming took place on Thursday, October 9, for California Lane, a six-part series set in a secluded 1970s canal-side caravan park.

Starring Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter as parents Jerry and Eddie, the series follows Lela, played by Erin Doherty, and her 11-year-old child as they arrive at the park seeking refuge.

The Watford shop was transformed into a 1970s-style supermarket and closed for five days to accommodate filming.

After filming scenes inside the shop, lead actress Erin took time out to pose for photographs with members of the head office management team.

The series is the most recent BBC collaboration between Hugo Blick and production companies Drama Republic and Eight Rooks.

Greg Brenman, executive producer and Drama Republic co-founder, said: “In California Avenue, Hugo has conjured a world of precious relationships and unexpected revelations, all delivered with a big, big heart and generous humour.”
