Northwood College for Girls were visited earlier this month by a well known face on our TV screens. Star of Casualty, EastEnders and Doctors, Helen Millar, was warmly welcomed by Northwood College girls on Monday October 13. Helen, who won the Alan Bates award for most outstanding newcomer, spent the day in school running theatrical work-shops for the GCSE and AS/A Level Drama and Theatre Studies pupils. With the objective to ‘get the girls out of the classroom and on to the stage’ Helen set the girls the task of turning their chosen novels into dramatic pieces for their examination coursework. “The girls were fantastic” Helen commented. “The drama studio is such a great supportive atmosphere to work in. I wanted the girls to show a real willingness to throw themselves in at the deep end and they certainly did that!” Currently appearing on BBC1’s Casualty, Helen, is about to appear on the stage in Midlands’ Arts Centre Theatre’s ‘Dracula: the Kisses’ as the lead part in an all-female cast. The talented young actress also finds the time to run her company, Rough Fiction, which facilitates a ‘Learn and Train Programme’, designed to help young actors to get into theatre without a writer. “It is wonderful that these girls have no fear on stage, and I cannot stress enough how important it is to actually practise drama and not get lost in just theory” concluded Helen.
