Merchant Taylors’ School’s (MTS) 1st XI Cricket team embarked on a fun-filled week-long tour across Sri Lanka last month.

From February 15 to 22, the team played against cricketers from schools across the country and learned about playing in different conditions, humidities, altitudes, and styles of play.

The boys played their final matches at Galle International Stadium, a venue renowned in the cricketing world.

Ian McGowan, director of cricket at MTS, said: “Cricket at Taylors’ aims to nurture self-aware, skilful individuals and committed team players. However, I believe that a successful school cricket programme should also support… personal development as well as sport specific development.

“Through a range of opportunities, we aim to identify and develop each player’s unique talents, protect and grow their confidence, and provide opportunities to make life-long memories.”

The boys also visited a tea plantation, explored the sacred Temple of the Tooth and Sri Dalada Maligawa, and visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ian continued: “The trip gave our pupils the chance to refine and develop their skills in alternative conditions, build team spirit, and experience new cultures, all while promoting personal development and fostering lasting memories.”

One of the lucky players, Ramin, shared with NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews: “At each ground we played at, the facilities and pitches were top class, and the views of the grounds themselves were stunning.

“We witnessed how cricket brings the Sri Lankan community together… The Sri Lankan Papare Band that played at our shorter format games created an incredible atmosphere for us to play in, and certainly brought a smile to the players, coaches and spectators.

“My family comes from Sri Lanka, and seeing relatives watch and support me at the games was truly special.

“Our team made so much progress in our cricket, but more importantly, we made countless wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.”
