A swim teacher from Watford Leisure Centre Woodside has swapped her goggles and swimming costume for running trainers after completing the London Marathon.
On Sunday, April 27, Ione Dickson joined thousands of runners for the 26.2-mile run from Greenwich to The Mall outside Buckingham Palace.
Ione decided to raise money for St John’s Ambulance Service, in the hopes of helping to “buy more equipment for those who are training and for the ambulance crews, and also to help increase people’s knowledge of First Aid.”
She shared to her fundraising page: “St John’s has been a big part of my life, and I am studying Paramedic Science at University.
“Running this marathon will be a big challenge for me, but I know that by running it all donations I raise will help an amazing charity, and it will be a great once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.”
Ione completed the marathon in 6 hours and 31 minutes, a feat she described as “a brill experience”, but that the “weather was an absolute killer. Honestly without the crowd I don’t think I wouldn’t have completed it!”
A spokesperson for the leisure centre shared to Facebook: “Huge congratulations to our swim teacher Ione!
“Not only did she conquer the 26.2 miles, but she also ran to support a cause close to her heart – St John Ambulance, an organization that provides life-saving medical services across the UK.
“Ione’s commitment to both the race and her charity is truly inspiring. Well done, Ione – you are a true champion!”
Ione has smashed her target, raising more than £3,000 from her £2,000 target. Head to www.tiny.cc/mwqk001 to donate.
