A Rickmansworth resident placed 16th in in the World Triathlon Championship on Thursday, October 17.
Alison Smith, 55, competed in the championship in Spain in the 55-57 category with 76 other entrants, and comfortably ended up in the top 20 of the race.
To qualify for the championships, British athletes must place in the top four of a triathlon calendar race in the UK. Alison placed second in Cardiff last year, securing her a place in Spain.
Speaking on the race atmosphere, she said: “It’s really social. Everybody is similarly minded, very focused but full of energy. Everybody is there to do their best but also to have a good time.”
Alison got into sport late in life and started competitive sport in her 30s.
At the championship, the runners ranged in age from 18 to 90.
Alison remarked that she hopes she will still be competing when she is that age, adding: “That’s absolutely going to be me; it would only be a case of which joint will go first! When I am 85 and the last one standing, maybe I will get the medal then.”
