BIG BREAK: School to relocate to Croxley despite fears over access

Published on: 25th October 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Plans to relocate Breakspeare School from Abbots Langley to the old Durrants playing field site in Croxley were officially approved yesterday evening (Thursday, October 24).

The new location will provide modern, purpose-built facilities for Breakspeare School, which caters for children aged two to 19 who have severe learning difficulties.

Helping to reduce lengthy waiting times families are currently facing for education for children with special educational needs and disabilities, the new school building will be able to accommodate 210 pupils, compared to the current capacity of 97 pupils.

However, both Croxley Green Parish Council, Croxley Residents’ Association and a number of residents have raised concerns about access to the new site.

One objector highlighted concerns about the access route via Manor Way to the site, saying: “We understand that the proposed Breakspeare School will house over 400 regular occupants – 210 pupil and 201 staff – travelling on a daily basis to and from the school… Access requirements will be unsuitable and inadequate via any part of Manor Way.

“This access route will present potential road safety, pollution and noise-related health and safety issues for pedestrians, road users and local residents alike so due consideration needs to be taken on alternative, non Manor Way options.”

Another said: “Manor Way is… designed, at the school end, to be a narrow cul de sac with no central line and is not designed for a large volume of traffic. It is inconceivable to consider this as a school entrance for 210 pupils and 201 staff. It will be dangerous, polluting, noisy and constantly jammed. ”

However, Dickinsons Ward councillor Narinder Sian shared: “I fully understand the concerns raised by local residents about access to the new site. It’s important we address those concerns to ensure minimal impact.

“The pressing need for this new school cannot be understated. Breakspeare School provides outstanding services for children and families who are currently facing long wait times for specialised education.

“This new site offers an opportunity to provide better care and education for those in need.”
