TOWN GEM: Restoration project underway to restore ancient woodland in Watford

Published on: 2nd March 2023   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Plans to restore Whippendell Wood in Watford to its historic glory by removing invasive species are now underway.

Watford Borough Council, which maintains the ancient woodland, is working together with Natural England, the Forestry Commission and Woodland Trust to gradually remove invasive non-native trees.

The trees will be gradually removed over the next five years so native trees, such as birch and rowan, can be planted or allowed to grow back naturally.

Speaking about the project, Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said the wood is a “gem” that is enjoyed by thousands of visitors.

He said: “There is work to be done to make it a healthy woodland. Looking after our environment and making Watford a greener town is so important, so I’m really pleased we are starting these works. The scheme will help us to keep the woods healthy for many more years.”

Whippendell Wood is designated as a site of special scientific interest by Natural England, which means it is protected by law.
