The stage is set for Abbots Langley Players’ (ALP) first play of the year as the team tackles Sir Ronald Harwood’s acclaimed Quartet.
The play, which follows four former performers in a retirement home for ex-musicians, first hit the West End in 1999. The foursome make an unlikely group, with the bawdy Wilf, played by ALP newcomer Vince McLoughlin; the innocent Cissy, played by Annette Toms; the quiet Reggie, played by Brian Hibberd; and the diva-like Jean, played by Valerie Gale.
The story is described by director Jane Adams as “saucy, funny, and touching”.
Jane, who has been front of stage on various ALP projects in the past, is loving the challenge of making her directorial debut.
Speaking to ABBOTSnews, Jane said: “I wanted a script that would challenge the actors and move the audience to laughter and possibly tears; something amusing and dramatic. Quartet was the answer.
“I could never have attempted directing a play without my wonderful cast. It also takes a lot of effort behind the scenes to set build, source costumes and props, organise the sound and lighting, prompt, handle publicity, and manage front of house. My very grateful thanks go to everyone from ALP who have worked so hard onstage and off to make this production of Quartet a reality.”
Quartet will be performed at the Henderson Hub between Thursday, March 23, and Saturday, March 25, with a matinee on the Saturday.
