When asked about running the local boozer, landlady of The Anchor pub Julie says that “it’s hard work, but you have to love it!”
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, staff in the hospitality industry have been working hard to tackle financial fears and the repercussion of having little to no customers for months during lockdown.
Speaking to HEMELnews, Julie said: “I had no intention of running the pub, but I felt it had lost its way a bit, so I thought, let’s see if we can turn this pub around!”
Julie took over the site in March last year, and said the venture started well with a busy summer of customers thanks to the 2024 Euros.
She continued: “We knew it would be quieter in the winter, but the gas and electric prices are crippling. We’re an old pub with open fires but you need the heating on.
“I don’t think the new government has helped at all. There are less pennies in people’s pockets to socialise.”
The landlady explained that she works 24/7, and calculating her hours compared to the revenue the pub makes means she only takes home around £4 an hour.
She said: “It’s one of those situations where you can make a living, but you’ll never be rich. But I happen to love this pub. I wouldn’t do it with any other pub; this one is special.”
