Former Hertfordshire county councillor Ian Laidlaw-Dickson OBE sadly passed away at the age of 75 on Thursday, June 1.

Ian served as a county councillor for 16 years, representing Hemel Hempstead North East from 1993 until 1997 and then Hemel Hempstead North West from 1997 until 2009.

He served on a number of committees and cabinet panels and was also Labour Group leader between 2005-09.

Ian served as a member of Dacorum Borough Council representing Adeyfield East for eight years from 1979 to 1987. He was also a member of the Herts Police Authority (2005-09), for which he served as chairman for five years.

Ian received an OBE for services to the police in 2009.

Born in Leighton Buzzard in 1948, Ian was a former BT manager. He devoted much of his time to voluntary work, including as director of DENS 2010-22, director of Dacorum Borough Council for Voluntary Service 2009-22, and a trustee of Dacortium.

Councillor Terry Douris, chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Ian worked tirelessly for the benefit of the community through his diligent work on the county council and he is a great loss to our county. Not only did he serve his constituents so well, but he also dedicated much of his spare time to working with the voluntary sector to build and support those less fortunate.”

Donations can be made to DENS Hemel Hempstead in Ian’s name here.
