Hemel Hempstead MP, Sir Mike Penning, announced today that he would be backing Penny Mordaunt in her campaign to the be the next leader of the Conservative Party, and thus future Prime Minister.
Mr Penning MP has been unable to voice his opinion publicity thus far in the contest, due to his role as a vice chair in party. He has now stepped down from that position to put his support behind Penny.
Sir Mike said: “I am very pleased to back Penny for Prime Minister. She has consistently proved herself to be a strong a decisive leader. She was the first ever female Secretary of State for Defence and serves as a Royal Naval Reservist.
“I have every confidence that she can secure the support of the Conservative Party and is the right person to lead the country.”
Ms Mordaunt MP is considered one of the favourites in the race to be Tory leader, which began after current leader and Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned last Thursday.
In the last hour, a YouGov poll named her as the clear frontrunner amongst Conservative Party members, who’s votes will decide who will take on the role.
